Perfectly captures the feeling of being a lonely teenager who doesn't know who they are and turns to strangers on the internet for emotional validation. The dreamy, esoteric, old internet feeling is used to convey the character's belief that the world is just a dream you have to wake up from. And the score by Alex G is beautifully offputting and creepy as always <3

The aesthetics and atmosphere are perfect and I love stories where a character is literally imprisoned inside a life that doesn't belong to them.
All Quiet on the Western Front
The 1930 version, not the awful new one (I'm not biased at all..) It really shows the care and perfect eye that directors had for each scene back when movies were so much harder to make. The practical effects are amazing. It's brutal and miserable but still has moments of comedy and comfort. Of course, they don't take away from the ultimate message about how there're no winners or even really survivors in war.
Mysterious Skin
A movie about emotional catharsis and the different ways people deal with and come to terms with abuse. Viscerally disgusting and uncomfortable to watch at times. The ending makes me cry every time. Like honestly sob like a baby. Also, using alien abduction in that way is extremely creative. Wish I thought of it first.
Martyrs (2008)
never seen a movie before or since that embodies such deep misery and existential terror. don't watch it if you're in a bad mood (or don't want to see horrific gore). it might be the best movie ever made. definitely in the toxic yuri hall of fame

I watched it for the stunning animation but it's also one of the best stories of all time. If you don't want to sit through the show watch this instead (it's basically a completely different story tho).

Makes me extremely nostalgic for my childhood in the pacific northwest. 2 of my favorite actors ever. And the greatest soundtrack of all time..... Also I'm so jealous of Juno's room.

Ik this isn't a real movie but you should watch it anyway. They literally had 40 minutes of music but they put all their money and resources into circus performers, decorations, costumes, makeup, a banjo(?) and of course some stage gay (and moulin rouge plagiarism) to put on the greatest concert in history.
